The Political Scale, Defined, Plotted & Analyzed.
Has anyone ever seen the Political Scale? So often talked about, leftwing-rightwing etc. But have you ever seen it drawn out? I hadn't. It sounds simple enough but it was never presented in any of my education. I've asked many people over the years about the scale, how it was laid out. I never found anyone that said they saw an actual scale, in print laid out to see and analyze. That's weird to me. It indicates that something was being hidden.
I went to highschool in NJ, I remember discussions where the idea was that the scale was circular? I still hear it today on occasion. It's an absolutely asinine thought process.
It is often said that Facsism is right wing. Another ignorant, and asinine perspective when you think, analyze, understand the concept.
Once, long ago I heard Mark Lavin, The Great One, as he's often called by Limbaugh, Hannity & others, he discussed the political scale on a radio show, he made sence, his description was the first time i had heard a reasoned description.
So I took up the task of using a graphic program from Microsoft s Office I plotted my own graph.
To the left, more government to the right, less government. Simple enough.
Then I plotted basic political positions on the graph. From highschool i remembered in the 1800s there was a period of time called Laissez-faire. An economic system where there was little or no government involvement in most economic activities. No regulations, no government subsidies.
i place that system to the right of center, further right on the scale is no government, anarchy.
To the left is more government, beginning with what most people call cronyism or crony capitalism. This leads to Corporatism where government and large corporations manipulate and control the market.
Mark Levin was right, his analysis that so called conservativism is in the middle of the scale, to the left of a pure free market. This possition reflects the recognition that society needed to accept some level of monopoly in order to create common needs such as the electrical grids, a free market approach would be chaos, public utilities were able to form, primarily to build the grid and power infrastructure.
It is the same principle that led to allowing cable operators to have monopoly power in order to build out the local cable infrastructures.
To the left of Corporatism, as government gains more power, the power moves from corporations manipulating government to government manipulating markets, thereby controlling corporations. This is the line where socialism emerges. Technically called Fascism, it is where government controls all things but takes advantage of certain free market principles to allow a level of civilian business ownership but under the thumb of centralized omni powerful government.
Back during the Great Depression, folk-song writer and performer, Woody Guthrie, traveled across America fighting fascism, often with another well known folk singer, Pete Seeger. On Guthrie's guitar he would tape paper with the words … This Machine Kills Fascists. This was back when the fascist states run by Benito Mussolini and Adolf Hitler were waging war in Europe.
But Guthrie was not referring to them, he was referring to American fascists. Say what? Yup. American fascists were his targets. And the mainstream media lied and slandered Guthrie and Seeger, just like they do today with Donald Trump and many others. There is no better way to understand American history during the great depression than to study the short but powerful life of Woody Guthrie. Though you won't learn much about him in public schools. If anything at all. Shameful.
Have you ever heard the term hootenany? If so, thank Guthrie and Seeger for that. Theirs is a fascinating story, especially their Union Hall tour in 1941. I will cover that story in a future article.
Back to Hitler, Hitler understood that between Communism and Facsism, the two forms of socialism, Fascism was by far superior. In fact Hitler despised Stalin, he thought he was a fool to be Communist, he eventually attacked the communist fool.
Communism is considered the most oppressive form of socialism and takes the position to the left of Fascism on my scale.
This is how I have come to see it, the Political Scale defined and analyzed. I welcome your well thought out arguments with an open mind, eager to hear other's points of view.
However, if your argument is “I don't think you're right”, and ends there, I'll ignore you.
America needs more people that can think and analyze for themselves, today very few people do either.
